‘Deadliest Catch’ Star Sig Hansen on Working with Johnathan Hillstrand — Will Season 21’s Remote Location Change the Game?
‘Deadliest Catch’ Star Sig Hansen Opens Up About Teaming Up with Johnathan Hillstrand and Season 21’s Remote Bering Sea Adventure
For fans of Deadliest Catch, few captains are as iconic and respected as Sig Hansen. Known for his steely determination, leadership, and decades of experience in the treacherous Bering Sea, Sig has become a staple of the Discovery Channel hit show. Season 21 of Deadliest Catch brings something new for the veteran skipper: an unexpected partnership and a journey to one of the most remote, challenging fishing grounds in the world.
Teaming Up: An Unlikely Partnership
This season, Sig Hansen joined forces with Captain Johnathan Hillstrand aboard the Time Bandit, a collaboration that caught many fans by surprise. Historically, the captains on Deadliest Catch have been fierce competitors, battling for limited crab in the harsh environment of the Bering Sea. But in Season 21, they set aside rivalry to work together in search of the elusive monster red king crab near Adak Island — part of the distant Andreanof Islands in Alaska’s Aleutian chain.

Reflecting on this unlikely alliance, Sig shared with Entertainment Weekly how the partnership felt like a reunion of old friends. “I keep thinking it was so interesting that we joined forces,” he said. “Twenty, 30 years ago, that wasn’t gonna happen. You’re too competitive. And now we’re like these old guys that are teaming up. So for me, that was just a lot of fun.”
The camaraderie between Sig and Johnathan brought a new dynamic to the show, showcasing how years of experience and mutual respect can transcend competition in pursuit of a common goal.
A Journey Back in Time
Heading to the far western reaches of the Bering Sea was more than just a strategic fishing decision for Sig — it was a personal journey down memory lane.
“This was as far west as you legally could fish for the Bering Sea crabery,” Sig explained. “Getting out close to Adak is a moment back in time for me.”
Years ago, Sig had fished these remote waters alongside his father. The memories of those trips were vivid and meaningful, especially as he shared stories with his daughter, Mandy Hansen, and her husband, Clark Pederson, who are now part of the family fishing legacy.
“I’ve always told Mandy and my son-in-law about what it was like out there back in the day, and the type of crab, the difference between the crab that are way out west versus the ones that you get normally in the Eastern Bering Sea,” Sig said. “And, you know, it’s almost like they didn’t believe me, like, ‘these monsters don’t exist.’ And then you get out there and lo and behold, daddy’s right.”

The gigantic red king crab they caught in those remote waters proved that Sig’s stories were more than just tall tales — they were part of the rich history and lore of Bering Sea fishing.
Family Legacy on the Water
Season 21 is also special for the Hansen family because it marks the first time Mandy Hansen captains the Northwestern on her own. Watching his daughter step into this role filled Sig with pride.
“It just made me so proud that she was making her own decision,” he said. “I don’t think she was letting anybody talk her into doing anything. And to me, that’s what it takes to run a boat and to be the boss, you know, whether it’s right or whether it was wrong. You just have to be the one to make that tough choice sometimes. And she did. And she does. And she showed it. And I wasn’t there to hold her hand. So I think it’s great.”
Sig’s reflections highlight the continuity of a family tradition that is as demanding as it is rewarding. The pressures of leadership, the weight of decision-making, and the raw challenges of the sea remain constants — but so does the pride of passing down this way of life to the next generation.
Risks and Rewards of the Remote Bering Sea
While the journey westward brought back fond memories and fruitful crab hauls, it was not without danger. The waters near Adak Island are known for being unpredictable and hazardous, even to the most seasoned fishermen.

Looking ahead to the rest of Season 21, Sig shared some insights on the risks and rewards of their expedition. “I don’t regret going out there,” he said. “I can say that we found enormous crab. And I can say that it brought back a lot of good memories… But it is a dangerous place.”
This statement is a reminder of the delicate balance that Deadliest Catch crews face every season — chasing lucrative catches in some of the world’s most perilous waters, where one wrong move can have catastrophic consequences.
What This Means for Deadliest Catch Fans
For longtime fans, Season 21 promises not only thrilling fishing action but also heartfelt stories of family, friendship, and legacy. Sig Hansen’s teaming with Johnathan Hillstrand is a rare and compelling twist that highlights how even rivals can unite for survival and success on the Bering Sea.
Meanwhile, Mandy Hansen’s leadership on the Northwestern signals a new chapter in the show’s evolving story, honoring the past while embracing the future.
Together, these storylines remind us why Deadliest Catch remains one of the most captivating reality shows on television — a blend of adventure, family, and the unyielding human spirit.
